This work is one of approximately 15 surviving paintings of the 50 commissioned by Jonathan Tyers for the supper boxes at Vauxhall Gardens, Britain's first commercial pleasure garden. It depicts a scene from Charles Coffey's ballad opera The Devil to Pay or The Wives Metamorphos'd, an adaptation of Thomas Jevon's play The Devil of a Wife (1686), first performed, with enormous success at Drury Lane Theatre, London on August 6, 1731. The Devil to Pay was a breakthrough role for Kitty Clive, who later became one of the founding members of David Garrick's acting company.

Glue relined. Scattered losses. Frame rubbing with corresponding areas of restoration areound the edges. Scattered areas of restoration, espectially to the faces and to the lady's right arm.
