Three Incroyables
Black ink and gray wash on paper
10 1/4 x 16 1/4 inches (26 x 41.5 cm)
Incroyables ("Unbelievables"), were French men of fashion, who, during the Government of the Directory (1795-99), mocked the restrained "Jacobin" manner of dress that had been introduced by the Revolution with exaggerated dandyism and outlandish hairstyles.

Hinged to the mount with paper tape along the upper margin. Round brown stain near the upper left corner. Some minor stainting and foxing; creases. Inscribed "Vernet (Carle)?" on the mount at lower right.
