The Lady is shown reading an Italian translation of the philosophical play La Vida es Sueno by the 17th-century Spanish poet and playwright Pedro Calderon de la Barca. This meditation on the nature of reality and destiny was read in translation throughout Europe in the 18th century.

Glue relined. Areas of restoration on both arms. A repaired hole about an inch in diameter in the background, rougly 5 inches above the lady's right hand. A repaired tear in the background about 5 inches long, running horizontally to the left of the lady's chest. Some restoration to the lace on her right sleeve.
