Russian Jeweled Gold and Platinum Brooch

In the form of the diamond-set Russian name Kharaks on a gold pin. Length 2 1/8 inches (5.4 cm).

Kharaks, designed by the architect Nikolai Krasnov (1864-1939) and completed in 1907, was the Crimean palace of Grand Duke George Mikhailovich and family. Located close to the palace of Emperor Nicholas II at Livadia and to Ai Todor, the palace of Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich and Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna, Kharaks played frequent host to members of the Russian Imperial Family and St. Petersburg society. Grand Duchess Marie recalled in her memoirs that Nicholas II "came two or three times a week, when living at Livadia, to dine with us."
