Lot 169
ALKEN, HENRY Sporting Scrap Book.
London: Thomas M'Lean, 1824. First edition, the scarcer folio issue. Period (publisher's?) pink boards, red roan spine, red leather label on upper cover. 10 x 14 1/2 inches (25.5 x 37 cm); title, 49 hand-colored soft-ground etched plates, the frontispiece inclusive. Some wear to binding, but a clean copy. With the de Portales and Gloucester bookplates (sold Christie's January 2006, part lot 616).
The folio issue was issued without the plate "The Hunters," which appears as plate 35 in the octavo form. The plates, and the coloring, are very fine. Schwerdt I, p. 25.
