  • Collection of French Furniture and Decorations Assembled by Anne Marie Aberbach and Her Husband, Music Publisher Julian J. Aberbach, Who Worked with Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Edith Piaf

NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle was honored to auction property from the Estate of Anne Marie Aberbach on Wednesday, October 25, 2017. Together with her husband, Julian J. Aberbach, she assembled an impressive collection of French furniture and decorative arts imbued with the sophistication and style of the Ancien Régime.

The sons of a prosperous Viennese jeweler, Julian and his brother Jean became prominent figures in the music industry through their music publishing firm, Hill and Range, whose clients included such legendary stars as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Edith Piaf.

In the 1930s as political tensions rose in Germany, the brothers moved to Paris, where they established and sold their first music enterprise. They emigrated to the United States, and Julian entered the US military as an officer during the War, stationed for a time in Georgia, where he was introduced to country music. Following the War, the brothers set up Hill and Range and achieved initial success with Spade Cooley’s hit Shame on You. Other clients would follow, among them Hank Snow, Eddie Arnold, Johnny Cash and most famously, Elvis Presley, with whom they had a close and enduring relationship.

Julian met the love of his life quite by happenstance. At a tabac in Paris, he asked a young woman named Anne Marie for advice on choosing lottery tickets. A whirlwind romance led to a long and loving marriage dedicated to family, philanthropy, and a love of music and art.

Highlighting the collection was a transitional Louis XV/Louis XVI commode à la grecque that reflects the very high quality work of the French cabinetmakers Simon Oeben, maître in 1769, and his brother, Jean-François, who was named ébéniste du roi in 1754 (est. $25,000-35,000). Two of the brothers’ important clients were the Marquise de Pompadour and the Duc de Choiseul, for whom they almost exclusively produced many commodes à la grecque.
