Italian Faux Marble Painted and Parcel Gilt Diorama of a Pharmacy
19th Century
Depicting an interior with a pharmacist standing above a seated man holding and a tooth in pincers, the vaulted interior fitted with albarelli, books, and mortar and pestle at the front, with two curtained doors reading MEDICAMENTA and FARMACOPEA above them, a chandelier hanging from the ceiling, the back with the motto HONORA MEDICUM/PROPTER NECESSITATEM/ETENIM ILUM CREAVIT ALTISSIMNS, the pedimented case with pierced foliate carved tympanum, the sides with engaged half-round pilasters with Ionic capitals. Height 26 inches (66 cm), width 22 inches (56 cm), depth 17 inches (43.2 cm).
Translation of the Latin motto from Ecclesiastes Sivach, 38:1: Honor a physician with the honor due unto him for the uses which ye may have of him; for the Lord hath created him.
