Jacques Stella, born and trained in Lyon, gained considerable renown in Rome during the 1620s as a painter of small devotional works on copper and various stones, including slate, marble alabaster, onyx and lapis lazuli. His enjoyed the most exalted patronage, including Pope Urban VIII and other members of the Barberini family. When he returned to France in 1634, he became the official painter to Cardinal Richelieu and was later appointed peintre du roi. This painting appears to date to shortly after his return to France. We are grateful to Sylvain Kerspern for his assistance in cataloguing this work. .
