The present work is one of six portraits of the steamsailer Lahn included in Harold Sniffen's catalogue raisonne of the work of Antonio Jacobsen. An early sketch of the boat is owned by the Mariner's Museum. This version shows the vessel with sails furled, while the other documented portraits of the Lahn show the sailes unfurled. A passenger ship built in 1887, the Lahn was one of four steel ocean liners belonging to the Rivers class of the Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL). They were known for their speed, and were named for rivers in Germany.
