The present works relate very closely to a pair of portraits depicting Richard and Margery Gibbs, attributed to Charles Willson Peale, that are included in the permanent collection of the Mercer Museum, Doylestown, PA. Those works, also ovals but slightly larger, measure 12 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches, and are similar in medium, oil on canvas backed by panel. The frames, too, are identical to those on the present works.
