Lot 192
[MANUSCRIPT] Horae B. M. V. Likely Northern Italy, early 15th century.
. Miniature illuminated manuscript in Latin written on delicate uterine vellum. Old brown pigskin over boards, tooled crudely in blind with a rectangular design with crossed rules, vellum paste-down and endsheets, housed in a modern clamshell case. 3 3/4 x 2 1/2 inches (9.5 x 6.5 cm); 223 ff., written in a well-formed rounded gothic hand in dark brown ink, 15 lines, traces of piercings for the rules on the extreme edges of some of the leaves, with 13 very fine arch-topped miniatures, with full page borders in colors and burnished and liquid gold, the facing pages with matching illuminated borders with five-line illuminated initials, rubrics throughout text in red and versal two-line initials throughout in burnished gold and colors. Very minor worming to the covers, minor finger soil. Leaf 214 shows evidence of red pouncing, presumably ground for a miniature that was never completed.
