Portrait of a Young Lady in Antique Dress in a Landscape, with a Dove and an Olive Branch
Oil on canvas
49 3/4 x 40 1/8 inches (126.5 x 102 cm)
The dove and olive branch, time-honored symbols of peace, also suggested to classically educated 17th- and 18th-century viewers the Greek goddesses Athena and Aphrodite, respectively patronesses of the useful arts and of love. For this reason, the dove and olive were associated with brides in that period, which suggests the occasion for this portrait.
