EINSTEIN, ALBERT Die Grundlage der allgemeinen Relativitaetstheorie.
. Leipzig: Verlag von Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1916. First edition, monograph issue, with printer's imprint "Druck von Metzger & Wittig in Leipzig" to verso of title, and "Metzger & Wittig, Leipzig" to back wrapper. Original wheat-colored paper wrappers. 9 x 6 3/8 inches (23 x 16 cm); 64, pp. Wrappers slightly toned, very minor wear and rubbing, but overall a far better than average copy..
Essentially an offprint from the Annalen Der Physik, volume 49, 1916, the work was significantly reimposed for this publication, which has a a separate title page, table of contents, an introduction by Einstein etc. It is the first separate appearance of the General Theory of Relativity, mathematically integrating Einstein's 1905 Special Theory with the Newtownian laws of gravitation. By any standard, this is one of the central intellectual breakthroughs that define 20th century physics. It has become so widely assimilated into the culture that the theory colors even lay perceptions of the universe. Grolier/Horblit 26c; Norman 696; PMM 408; Weil Checklist (1960), 80a.
