Kuhrner trained at the Vienna Academy under Huber. Becoming interested in exotic subject matter, he painted powerful images of African wildlife and of the Indians of North America, which he rendered from his imagination. This painting was inspired by the Buffalo Bill circus act that traveled to Vienna, at which the Native American performers moved Kuhrner, and he used them as models for this painting.
