Consignments Now Being Accepted for the Fall 2013 Street Art Auction
Doyle New York’s Street Art Auction on April 8, 2013 followed the success of the nation’s first Street Art auction, which took place at Doyle last Fall. The recent sale showcased many of the most important artists in the history of Street Art and Graffiti, spanning the 1980s to the present day. World auction records were achieved for Ces, Alben, Cost, ENX, Phetus, Skewville and Jack Stewart.
The top lot of the day was a 2012 portrait of Darby Crash by Shepard Fairey (b. 1970) that achieved $28,125, surpassing its estimate of $15,000-20,000. Executed in acrylic and collage on paper, the portrait depicted Darby Crash, a legendary figure of the late 1970s punk scene in Los Angeles. The brilliant lead singer of The Germs, Crash wrestled with drug abuse and his homosexuality, and fatally overdosed on heroin in 1980.
The sale also featured works by Faile, Margaret Kilgallen, Barry McGee, Cope2, Seen, Futura 2000, Ghost, Ivory, Pure Evil, Retna, and Swoon, among many others.
With competitive bidding from the salesroom, the telephones and the Internet, the sale totaled $222,656, with 61% sold by lot and 64% by value.
