Additional Notes & Condition Report

appears to be in generally good condition; there are a few areas on the top side of the base that have small shallow flake losses to the patina, however, in this appraiser's opinion, they are not of major consequence; there is hardly any evidence of wear to the patina, perhaps with the exception to the uppermost rim edge of the elephant's back, where there is slight wear; the underside is "rough" or exposed, i.e., there is no protective felt pad, etc.

Note:
According to the Des Cordes catalogue raisonne, the elephant was cast in an edition of 20 (which is rare for Bugatti bronzes and is probably due to its small size; most were cast in editions of under 10), all cast sometime during or after 1913. Each cast was numbered as it was finished. It is not known whether all 20 castings of this model were ever executed. Bugatti did a total of 13 different models of elephants (the other 12 are completely different) i.e., this is not a reduction of a larger bronze.
