Lot 20
Rogelio de Egusquiza
Spanish, 1845-1915
A Spanish Beauty
Signed REgusquiza with conjoined first initials (ur)
Oil on panel
7 3/4 x 6 inches
Provenance:
Private collection

Born into a wealthy family in Santander, Spain, Egusquiza moved to Paris after his mother died when he was nine. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts as well as with Francisco Mendoza and Léon Bonnat. This painting may date from about 1874, when Egusquiza moved to Rome, working there in the studio of fellow Spaniard, Mariano Fortuny y Marsal. Egusquiza's light touch and rapid brushwork evoke Fortuny's style as does the subject of this figure in an especially colorful dress with matching shoes. Eguszuiza clearly enjoyed rendering the textures of the varied objects within the scene, made evident by a softly glowing light.
