On the Terrace exemplifies the Gilded Age, a time when such images of idealized female figures in classical attire represented the refinement, beauty, and leisure associated with high culture. Showing his subject seated on a stone bench, Jones gave the work a frieze-like appearance, enhancing its decorative effect. At the same time, by bathing the scene in a gentle light, he conjured a poetic realm distinct from the materialism of an increasingly industrialized America. An artist who trained in Paris with Bougereau and other academic teachers, Jones was among the key American artists to translate French classicism into an American idiom.
