This depiction of an Italian woman is attributed to Chasseriau, a French romantic painter who was a student of Ingres and later influenced by Eugène Delacroix. While the linear treatment in this image and the tilt of the woman's head evoke the female figures of Ingres, the subject is less idealized than those in Ingres's art, as the artist captured her serious expression of deep, inward thought.
