Although the location shown in this work has yet to be identified, the impact of William Glackens's 1895 trip to Paris can be seen clearly in The Terrace, a painting that strongly evokes the spirit of fin de siècle Parisian life. The setting is a promenade overlooking a city, below which Glackens suggestively conveys the presence of buildings and electric lights becoming visible at dusk. As well-dressed ladies and gentlemen stroll and enjoy the view, swirling clouds overhead seem to suggest a coming storm. An image of modern life, The Terrace evokes the nuances of urban leisure in the Belle Epoque, and at the same time anticipates the realism that Glackens and other members of The Eight would bring to the fore in American art in the years ahead.
