Doyle New York's auction of European Art on May 9, 2012 offered European paintings, drawings and sculpture of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
With competitive international bidding from buyers in the salesroom, on the telephones and via the Internet, the sale totaled $1,689,375 against a pre-sale estimate of $1,077,700-1,700,800 with a strong 81% sold by lot and 88% by value.
Highlighting the sale were two works by Edouard Vuillard (French, 1869-1940) from the collection of longtime MoMA board member Joanne Melniker Stern. Fashionable Lady, Square des Batignolles, circa 1898, executed in glue-based distemper on cardboard, achieved $374,500, more than tripling its estimate of $80,000-120,000. A circa 1895 oil on paper laid down on panel titled The Black Belt estimated at $100,000-200,000 sold for a stunning $350,500.
