Lot 126
[TEXAS] ROBERTS, ORAN M.[ILO]. Description of Texas, Its Advantages and Resources, With Some Account of Their Development, Past...
... St. Louis, Missouri: Gilbert Book Co., 1881. First edition, this copy inscribed on the front free endpaper "Presented to/Miss. Lucy J. Dupuy/by OM Roberts/Governor of/Texas/May 18th 1882." Original cloth-backed marbled boards, with front wrapper bound in, (though this is not the issue binding, it is presumably some form of presentation binding, given the placement of the inscription). 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches (22 x 14.5 cm); [6], x, 17-133 pp. (as issued), with frontispiece portrait, eight chromolithograph plates and five folding maps (four hand-colored). Binding worn, the text shaken, the first signature loose in the binding.
A promotional piece for Texas settlement. Inscribed copies by this important Texas governor (1878-1883) are quite rare. Among his other accomplishments, he sat on the Texas Supreme Court, and was largely responsible for founding the University of Texas, at which he taught law for ten years after his retirement. Howes R344; Raines p.175; Philips American Sporting Books p. 314.
