Doyle New York's Important Estate Jewelry auction on December 6, 2011 saw international competition from hundreds of bidders in the salesroom, on the telephones, and via the Internet. The sale offered jewelry spanning the Antique, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modern eras by some of the world's most prestigious makers, including Harry Winston, Cartier, David Webb, and Tiffany & Co. Also featured were fine watches and objets de vertu, including elegant compacts and cufflinks.
Strong international competition resulted in a successful auction total of $4,439,250 against a pre-sale estimate of $3,088,800-4,442,100, with a strong 85% sold by lot and 88% sold by value.
Highlighting the sale was a selection of high carat weight diamond rings, all of which surpassed their estimates. The top lot of the day was a ring centering an emerald-cut diamond of 7.41 carats, G color, VVS1 clarity, estimated of $175,000-275,000, that achieved $314,500. A ring featuring a pear-shaped diamond of 6.46 carats, G color, VS2 clarity, sold for $182,500 against an estimate of $100,000-150,000. Also selling for $182,500 was an example set with a marquise-shaped diamond 13.96 carats, L color, VS1 clarity, estimated at $80,000-120,000. Another set with a round diamond of 10.23 carats estimated at 70,000-90,000 achieved $158,500. A ring by Cartier featuring a Very Light Pink emerald-cut diamond of 5.10 carats, VVS1, sold for $146,500, well over its estimate of $80,000-120,000.
All prices include the buyer's premium.
