Lot Details

Lot 44
U.S. Great Central Fair, Philadelphia
1864 30c. Black, Scott no. WV 13, tied by "Great Central Fair, June 11, 1864" circular date stamp with additional manuscript marking addressed to Miss Mary Clay Gray, Boston, Mass., with a horizontal pair of the 2c. Black Jack tied by Philadelphia, Pa. circular date stamp and bull's-eye cancels paying the carrier rate. Cover is back stamped with Philadelphia A 3rd pick up and June 15 Boston receiver, flap was opened and bears the result of a small tear.
This important Philatelic piece of interest to Sanitary Fair, Black Jack and Carrier collectors is one of a small handful of Sanitary Fair covers and an exceedingly rare example of a mixed franking usage. Two others with U.S. postage and Fair stamps were previously recorded and we believe this to be new to the Census.
