Comprising an Extensive Collection of English and Continental Furniture and Decorations

  • Comprising an Extensive Collection of English and Continental Furniture and Decorations
  • Featuring an Important Pair of George II Mahogany Library Armchairs Stamped Gibside
  • And a Large Group of Old Master Paintings

Doyle New York will hold an auction of Important English and Continental Furniture and Decorations, including Old Master Paintings and Drawings on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 10am. Featured in the sale will be property from the Estate of Joseph A. Patrick, comprising almost seventy lots of English and Continental furniture and decorations and Old Master paintings.

Highlighting the Patrick Estate is a pair of important George II mahogany library armchairs, mid 18th century, stamped Gibside -- the country etate that was once owned by the prominent Bowes-Lyon family, ancestors of the late Queen Mother. Paintings from the Patrick Estate include two equestrian views by John Nost Sartorius (British, 1759-1828), Benjamin Aislabee with his Hunter, dated 1797, and Huntsmen in a Landscape, dated 1798. Also featured is Francis Cotes’ (British, 1726-1770) bucolic portrait of The Burdett Family in a Landscape.

The Estate of a Distinguished Gentleman

Property from the Estate of a Distinguished Gentleman offers almost sixty lots of important Continental and English furniture and decorations. Highlights include two early Louis XV gilt-bronze mounted brass inlaid tulipwood and kingwood commodes, both circa 1735, one stamped G. Schwing/Kens.

Property From Other Collections and Estates

Property from other collections and estates includes a pair of elaborate Regency silver gilt wine coolers by Paul Storr, London, circa 1813-14, retailed by Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, one collar marked Benjamin Smith, London, circa 1807-8. They are each decorated with the Arms of Leiven. Prince Christopher Andreevich Lieven was born into an ancient family of Baltic nobility. After a successful military career, he and his wife moved to London where Prince Lieven served as the Russian Ambassador to the Court of St. James. Of more recent vintage, from Estate of Ben Sonnenberg, comes a handsome oak double sided bookcase by Edwin Lutyens that was a gift of Lutyens’ daughter given to Mr. Sonnenberg in 1996. Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens was the most influential British architect of the 20th century. From another collection is a George III mahogany bureau bookcase stamped Gillows, Lancaster, circa 1800. Certain to attract the attention of collectors and dealers alike is a large group of European works of art comprising works from the Renaissance to the 19th century. The selection of Old Master paintings is highlighted by Jacques-Laurent Agasse’s (Swiss, 1767-1849) elegant equestrian view of Miss Cazenove on her Favorite Hunter. Also noteworthy is newly rediscovered oil on canvas by the French baroque artist Antoine Coypel (French, 1661-1722) entitled The Judgment of Solomon.
