On April 20, 2011, Doyle New York held a successful auction of Old Master, Modern and Contemporary Prints. With competitive international bidding from buyers in the salesroom, on the telephones and via the Internet, the sale totaled $941,563, surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $552,000-812,700, with a strong 92% sold by lot and 97% by value.

European Prints

European prints featured Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Napoleon, color lithograph, 1895, $43,750; works by and after Pablo Picasso, including Engraved Bottle, painted and partially glazed white ceramic vase, 1954, $7,750 and Nue au Faubourg St. Honore, color offset lithograph, 1970, $16,250; color lithographs by and After Marc Chagall including Tribe of Zabulon, 1964 $10,625 and Roses and Mimosa, 1975, a record $46,875; and Salvador Dali, The Twelve Tribes of Israel, set of 13 drypoints and color pochoir, $15,000.

American Prints

American prints were highlighted by Mary Cassatt, Gardner Held by His Mother, drypoint, circa 1887, $11,250; early color woodcuts by Gustave Baumann, including Summer Clouds, 1925, $13,750; Stow Wengenroth, High Arches, Brooklyn Bridge, lithograph, 1960, $8,125; and Thomas Hart Benton, Ten Pound Hammer, lithograph, 1967, $6,250.

Contemporary Prints

Contemporary prints included Bridget Riley, Fragment 5, screenprint printed in black and white, 1965, $13,750; Jasper Johns, Figure 5, lithograph printed in black and grey, 1968, $9,375; Gerald Laing, Baby, Baby Wild Things, set of five color screenprints, 1968, $11,875; rare-to-the-market lithographs by Willem de Kooning, which all brought record prices, including Landing Place #2, 1970, $21,250; Andy Warhol, Mao, color screenprint, 1972, $28,125; Erte, The Alphabet, set of 26 color lithographs and screenprints, 1976-77, $10,625; Tom Wesselmann, Still Life of Petunias, Lilies and Fruit, color screenprint, 1988, $11,875; Keith Haring, Pop Shop III, set of four color screenprints, 1989, a record 25,000; and Roy Lichtenstein, The Oval Office, color screenprint, 1992, $28,125.
