Pair of French Gilt and Patinated-Bronze and Rouge Marble Figures of an Ancient Egyptian Scribe and High Priest Titled Hierogrammate
and Pastophore
Cast from models by Emile Picault, third quarter of the 19th century
Each modeled in a standing pose, bare chested with a headdress, one figure holding a canopic jar and stylus, the other holding an offering, on a stepped rectangular marble base. Height 33 inches.
Provenance:
Zandu Inc., New York, 1956

This pair of bronzes was acquired by James Mont (1904-1978) and rested on Mont designed end tables with wall mounted lamps en suite. A pair of end tables and lamps, a hutch and a side table will be offered in the Doyle + Design auction on April 12, 2011.

Wear to patina; the figure holding the offering needs to be fastened; currently the upper half of the figure can be lifted off and separated from its lower half; the rouge marble elements that comprise part of the offering has been restored and there are a few chip losses to this component; chips and some infilling to marble bases; each figure is inscribed 'Picault', the stylus held by the scribe is bent.
