According to the bill of same from Cav. Francesco D'Atri, the painting depicts the visit to the Cardinal Borghese by the newly married Pauline Bonaparte and Prince Camillo Borghese, nephew of the Cardinal. In attendance at the event are figures from Italy's historic aristocracy and include Victoria Colonna, a celebrated 15th century Italian poetess, seated at left; Bianca Cappello, a 16th century noblewoman and mistress and, later, the second wife of Francesco I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, also seated at left; the two Morosini sisters, Angela and Morosina, of 16th century Venetian aristocracy, stand in the center of the painting.
