Wilhelm Hunt Diederich successfully joined the beautiful with the useful in the Arts and Crafts tradition, while streamlining form in the spirit of Art Deco. The Hounds and Hare motif employed in the present Music Stand was a recurring theme in Diederich's work, appearing in a Fire Screen as well as in a Weathervane and a Chandelier. The supporting standing hounds also appear in a full-scale drawing as table supports [D. Wigmore Fine Art, Inc.] , and were incorporated into the design of other functional objects. The elegant composition in the music rest itself, featuring two prowling hounds and a fleeing rabbit joined by the scrolled tails and extended tensed legs of the dogs, is a prime example of Diederich's talent for silhouette. The combination of two-dimensional graphic balance, and strong energetic form, with the subtle handling of the medium of wrought iron creates a compelling work of art.
