Pair of George III Gilt-Wood Consoles
Circa 1765
Each Sarrancolin marble top above a fluted frieze with alternating rosettes and ribbon bouquets, raised on acanthus carved cabriole legs ending in scrolling toes. Height 34 inches (86.4 cm), width 50 inches (1.27 m), depth 24 3/4 inches (62.9 cm).
The pair of consoles shown here illustrate several elements featured in similar examples from the workshops of Robert Adam and Thomas Chippendale. These include the elegant fluted frieze incorporating paterae and the cabriole legs carved with acanthus leaves at the knees ending shell carved scrolled toes.
