MONROE, JAMES Military commission on vellum,
, engraved document with manuscript annotations, appointing Alexander R. Thompson to the rank of Major, effective May 1, 1824. Single vellum sheet with affixed seal, 9 1/2 x 16 1/2 inches (24 x 42 cm), secretarially annotated with details of the appointment, signed by Monroe as President below the main text at right, and by John Caldwell Calhoun as Secretary of War. Folded in sixths as usual, slight loss at the mid-fold in a blank area, signatures slightly faded; Together with a land grant on vellum for 150 acres in Detroit, Michigan, August 21, 1837, secretarially signed for Martin Van Buren.
