Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted String Inlaid Mahogany and Walnut Commode
After a model by G. Beneman and J. Stockel in the collection at Fontainebleau, late 19th/early 20th century
The shaped mottled mauve, gray and white veined molded rectangular marble top with rounded front corners, above a conforming case enclosing a pair of short drawers above a pair of cupboard doors opening to reveal four sliding drawers and an open compartment, flanked by quarter round reeded columns formed as clusters of spears, raised on toupie feet, decorated with an oval shield with the head of Medussa, two crossed arrow filled quivers, flags, swords, battle axes, laurel branches and a plumed helmet. Height 36 1/4 inches, width 6 feet 2 1/2 inches, depth 25 1/2 inches.

marble top: light scratches to surface; small chips to rim edges; thin vertical line of infilling, located near the back right facing edge

case: appears to be in good condition; a few screws that the secure the metal mounts are missing; a small portion of the metal decorative band is detached but present; some minor vertical hairline splitting to the veneer on either side (but not in this appraiser's opinion to be consequential); three keys accopmpany this lot; the keys do lock the two frieze drawers and the lower lock
