M. Knoedler & Co., New York
Purchased by the Honorable Hugh J. Grant, March 18, 1899
In his maturity Frederic Bridgman, an inveterate traveler, broadened his subject matter from the orientalist themes that had earlier occupied him to include figure studies, decorative subjects, and landscapes such as the present work. He strongly objected to the broken brushwork and brighter colors of the Impressionist School, writing an anti-Impressionist tract, L'Anarchie dans l'Art in 1897.
The Collection of Hugh J. Grant and Lucie Mackey Grant
