This work is a replica of the portrait Greuze painted of the Dauphin Louis in 1761. Greuze was introduced to the royal family by his patron, Ange-Laurent de Live de Jully, Introduceur des Ambassadeurs at Versailles. After the sitting, the Dauphin told Live de Jully, "You told me the painter was a strange individual, but you forgot to inform me he was a madman."
