DICKENS, CHARLES. Pickwick Papers. 1st edition in book form.
London: Chapman & Hall, 1837. First edition in book form, with the first issue of the engraved title, and the footnote on page 9 present. Full three-quarters mauve morocco, marbled sides, by Root and Son. 8 inches (21 cm). xiv, leaf with binders' instructions, 609 pp., all edges gilt; with 43 engravings after "Phiz," and R. Seymour. Laid into this copy is the signature portion of a letter by Dickens, addressed to his father. The felicitation reads "In haste, your affectionate son." The reverse bears a postal frank from Montreal, dated May 1842. Front board detached, binding somewhat faded, some pale foxing (as usual) to the plates.
The inserted letter, though just a fragment, is of especial note as it is addressed to Dickens's father during the author's first North American tour.
