Rare Germaine Couture Chemise Style Dress
French, 1920s
Of brown silk brocaded in gold and bronze metallic thread with Orientalist inspired designs, the sides of the skirt hung with similarly brocaded ribbon edged with beaded fringe, with weighted hem, size 6-8, labeled: Germaine Couture/Germaine Coubit/Marthe Charlier/24 Rue Pasquier/Paris/Tel. Gutemb. 05-77/stamped Made in France.
Very good condition.
Germaine Coubit was a contemporary of Poiret, Drecoll, Lucien Lelong and Jean Patou. Germaine Couture is referred to in the records of the Tirocchi Sisters, custom dressmakers located in Providence, Rhode Island from 1915-1947. A. & L. Tirocchi Gowns were custom clothiers to high society New England women and based their designs on leading French couture styles.
