BOSTON, MA – Following Doyle's successful Inaugural Boston Auction, join us for Boston Collects on Friday, September 29, 2023 at Noon. Held in Doyle's Boston gallery and livestreamed on Doyle.com, the Boston Collects auction will feature a wide range of artwork, furniture, Americana, silver, decorative arts and jewelry from collections and estates in the New England area and beyond. Highlighting the sale is Property from the Private Collection of Sylvia Napier.

Doyle’s Inaugural Boston Auction on June 8 surpassed expectations with spirited competition throughout the sale. Competition was widespread, as successful buyers represented not only the Boston area, but states from coast to coast, as well as countries on four continents.

Boston Collects, Doyle Boston’s second auction, continues to expand Doyle’s presence in Boston and New England, featuring fine art, furniture, decorative arts, silver, and jewelry from local estates and collections.

Furniture from various owners is highlighted by Massachusetts-made furniture from a private New York collection, including two Chippendale mahogany chests of drawers, a lolling chair, an inlaid sofa probably made in Boston, and an impressive Federal gentleman’s secretary made in Salem, Massachusetts, attributed to Nehemiah Adams (1769-1840) by its similarities to a labeled piece in the collection at Winterthur. The secretary was sold eighty-five years ago when the collection of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst was offered at Parke-Bernet.

Other property with strong ties to Boston and long private provenance comes from the Estate of Mary Helen & Robert K. McMenamin, including a paint-decorated fire bucket made in Boston’s Charlestown neighborhood, an oil on canvas portrait of a clipper ship, a folky watercolor of the vessel Kanhawa of Boston, and a portrait of David Dodge, a resident of and town clerk in Charlestown. Mary Helen was a descendant of many of the old Puritan families in New England – the Dodges, Lows, Haskells, Rusts, Pierces, Choates, Smalls and Ranletts. Her great-great-grandfather, Captain Charles Augustus Ranlett (who commanded the Kanhawa), was also commander for 21 years of the Surprise, the first Clipper ship to be built in Boston, in 1851.

An international selection of approximately forty lots of sterling and other silver is highlighted by a George III tea and coffee service hallmarked by Benjamin Smith of London circa 1815, and a tablespoon by Massachusetts silversmith Paul Revere, Jr., made around 1800.

A selection of early Chinese, Annamese, and other Far Eastern ceramics comes from a descendant of Justice G. Mennen and Nancy Williams, of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. The ceramics are the remaining privately held objects from a large and renowned collection gifted in part to the Detroit Institute of Arts, The Flint Museum of Art, and the University of Michigan Museum of Anthropology.

Finally, DOYLE Boston is proud to present The Private Collection of Sylvia Napier. A Massachusetts native, Sylvia lived her life abroad, traveling the world as a collector and antiques dealer. Sylvia owned a beautifully eclectic and world-renowned antiques shop on Kings Road in London that showcased art and antiques from Asia and Europe. Sylvia kept many beloved items in her personal collection, which then travelled to her grand 17^th century home in Arles, France and ultimately her historic 1770s house in Weston, Massachusetts. Her collection was assembled with care, love and a discerning eye.
