Le Parfait mareschal, qui enseigne a connoistre la beaute, la bonte, et les deffauts des chevaux... Paris: Gervais Clouzier, 1682. Stated fifth edition. Two parts bound as one, calf of the period (rebacked, retaining the original spine), all edges speckled red. 9 3/4 x 7 inches (25 x 18 cm); engraved title, printed title, portrait, 3 ff. avis au lecteur and first privilege leaf, 546, [viii] pp.,; [2], 398, [xii] pp., two engraved plates (one folding), and illustrations in-text. Binding worn and rebacked as noted, new endpapers, lacking at least a4, the second leaf of the privilege a few minor stains but generally a fresh copy internally. Sold as is, not subject to return.
A foundational work in the science of horses, this was first published in 1664 and is considered the first true veterinary treatise. It was reprinted several times throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Though this lacks at least one preliminary leaf as noted, in general it is an attractive copy.

Thomas Jefferson Letter on Toussaint Louverture
Highlighting the sale was a fascinating 1802 letter from Thomas Jefferson as president to Maryland Governor John Francis Mercer that achieved a strong $32,000. The remarkable letter captures a rare, candid moment in which Jefferson assesses, with striking clarity, the arrest of Toussaint Louverture, a leader of the Haitian Revolution, by French General Charles LeClerc, Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Jefferson perceptively warned that LeClerc’s actions would erode trust and likely spark further racial conflict—an insight that proved remarkably accurate. Beyond its sharp political foresight, the letter reflects the broader anxiety the Haitian Revolution provoked in the United States, which contributed to decades of diplomatic isolation of Haiti.
