The first Aldine edition of Herodian's Roman History with early annotations in Greek and Latin

Herodiani historiarum lib. VIII gracece pariter, et latine. [Venice: Heirs of Aldus Manutius and Andrea Torresano, 1524]. First separate Aldine edition. Modern vellum over boards, 6 x 3 7/8 inches (15.5 x 10 cm). Collation: 8º: π4 Α–Λ8 Μ4 1–118 1210; 194 leaves. Complete with all blanks. Binding worn, with a stain to the front cover, joints cracked, spine lifted away from the upper joint and nearly detached. The text, particularly in the Greek section, has been copiously annotated by an early owner in Greek and Latin. Otherwise, quite clean internally, with some light foxing throughout.
First Aldine edition of Herodian's Roman History, heavily annotated by an early reader. The text was available in either a bilingual edition comprising both parts, or separately in either Greek or Latin editions. Adams H377, Ahmanson-Murphy 198, Renouard 98/2.

Thomas Jefferson Letter on Toussaint Louverture
Highlighting the sale was a fascinating 1802 letter from Thomas Jefferson as president to Maryland Governor John Francis Mercer that achieved a strong $32,000. The remarkable letter captures a rare, candid moment in which Jefferson assesses, with striking clarity, the arrest of Toussaint Louverture, a leader of the Haitian Revolution, by French General Charles LeClerc, Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Jefferson perceptively warned that LeClerc’s actions would erode trust and likely spark further racial conflict—an insight that proved remarkably accurate. Beyond its sharp political foresight, the letter reflects the broader anxiety the Haitian Revolution provoked in the United States, which contributed to decades of diplomatic isolation of Haiti.
