Auction: Important Fine Art, May 20, 2026
NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle will hold an auction of Important Fine Art on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at 11am. The sale will present an exceptional selection of artworks spanning the mid-19th to the late 20th century.
Among the sale highlights are works by Claudio Bravo, Lucio Fontana, Zarina Hashmi, Scott Kahn, Franz Kline, Richard Lindner, Louise Nevelson and Maurice Prendergast.
Indian-born artist Zarina Hashmi (1937–2020) created minimalist works on paper exploring themes of home, memory and displacement, shaped by her experience of migration after the Partition of India and her life across multiple countries as the wife of an Indian diplomat. Property from the Estate of Susann Kelly Kurz, Home, from 1981, was acquired by Kurz in the early 1980s after being introduced to the New York-based artist through friends in the Indian diplomatic community. Laszlo Moholy-Nagy's (Hungarian, 1895-1946) Untitled (Study for AXL II) is a preliminary work on paper for the 1927 painting featured in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum collection. Showcasing the Russian Constructivists' influence on Moholy-Nagy's work, Untitled (Study for AXL II) is an early example of the artist's exploration into light and space. (lot 8)
Leading off a selection of Irish Modern Art from the Collection of Joseph M. Murphy is Composition with Guitar, an elegantly rhythmic Cubist work by Evie Hone (1894-1955). A pioneer of Synthetic Cubism, Hone is credited with helping to bring Modern Art to Ireland. Having studied in Paris, first under Andre Lhote (two of whose works are included in this sale) and then Albert Gleizes, who had a significant influence on the trajectory of her career. Although Gleizes rarely accepted pupils, Hone, together with her friend and fellow artist Mainie Jellett, succeeded in gaining admission to his studio. Today, Hone’s work is held in major collections including the National Gallery of Ireland, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Hugh Lane Gallery, Ulster Museum and Crawford Gallery. (lot 13)
