Alexander Sergeevich Khrenov established a distinguished architectural career in St. Petersburg, where he designed or reconstructed more than thirty buildings, most notably the palace of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich Jr. In addition to his architectural achievements, he was a celebrated watercolorist and served on the board of the Society of Russian Watercolorists.
Following the Russian Revolution, Khrenov emigrated from Russia and spent time in Harbin and Shanghai, where he designed a number of notable buildings. His son, Boris Krenov (b. 1897, St. Petersburg), likewise lived for many years in Shanghai, whose distinctive architectural landscape became a recurring subject in his artistic oeuvre.
