The Foro della Via Appia ( or Forum Appii in Latin) was an ancient Roman halting place on the Appian Way approximately 40 miles (63.5 km) southeast of Rome. The site also marked the beginning of a canal that ran beside the road through the Pontine Marshes, on which many travelers continued their journey by boat. The place is mentioned by a number of classical sources, including Horace (Satires 1.5.3-6) -- who described it as "stuffed with crooked boatmen and innkeepers"--and the book of Acts, which mentions (28.15) that St. Paul was met there by a group of Christians welcoming him to Rome. By the 19th century, the site was almost deserted, as we see in this work.
