NEW YORK, NY -- International bidding drove exceptional results at Doyle's auction of the Collection of Joanne B. Breyer as the sale total doubled expectations! This first offering of property from the Collection presented an impressive array of elegant furniture, decorations, artwork and more.

Mrs. Breyer’s collection of fine and decorative arts reflects her passion for entertaining and cosmopolitan taste. Her homes from Palm Beach to Newport were decorated in a distinctive and sophisticated style, seamlessly blending diverse cultures and periods. Asian and Orientalist influences are prominent, with monkeys, elephants, tigers and other exotic motifs alongside her cherished cats. These whimsical elements were harmoniously paired with Neoclassical European pieces, resulting in a sumptuous and very individual setting for entertaining her guests.

To accommodate large parties, Mrs. Breyer collected extensive porcelain services by Christian Dior, Lynn Chase, Tiffany & Co. and other prestigious makers, in addition to colorful lettuceware by Dodie Thayer. Silver offerings are highlighted by an elaborately decorated pair of French silver gilt wine coolers and a pair of English sterling wine coolers by Robinson Edkins, as well as a pair of Regency covered vegetable dishes by Joseph Craddock and William K. Reid. Also noteworthy are a rare Fortuny "Scherazade" Orientalist silk chandelier, a French 18th century Aubusson chinoiserie tapestry, and a Louis XVI extension dining table.

The fine art section of the sale showcases over fifty lots of paintings, drawings, and bronzes, covering a range of subjects, including animals, landscapes, still lifes, portraits and Orientalist scenes. Among the exquisite Asian objects are precious Chinese porcelains, paintings, jades and hardstone carvings.

Mrs. Breyer inherited a number of significant items from her mother-in-law, Margaret Breyer, who was also a discerning collector. Margaret’s legacy included paintings, porcelains and early American furniture.

Property from the Collection continues with the sales of Fine Jewelry & Luxury Handbags on December 11, Important Jewelry on December 12, and Jewelry Online on December 17, as well as Old Master Paintings in January, Important Paintings in Spring 2025, and other upcoming auctions. (Read Bio)
