Al Hansen
American, 1927-1995
There's a Tiger in Every Town, 1964
Signed and dated Al Hansen NYC 1964 and inscribed as titled on the reverse
Collaged Hershey's wrappers on wood
5 x 3 1/2 inches (12.7 x 8.89 cm)

Provenance:
Private collection, New York

A student of John Cage and member of Fluxus, Al Hansen explored performance pieces in addition to collage and painting. Hansen was deeply involved in the New York art scene in the 60s and 70s, both a frequent visitor to Warhol's Factory (his daughter Bibbe would later become a Warhol protege), as well as a key participant in Allan Kaprow's Happenings. With the 1964 collage There's a Tiger in Every Town, Hansen employs his well-known usage of Hershey's Bar wrappers to create a picture plane, with an arrangement of elements that cleverly hint at the silhouette of a tiger. Created just a year before the release of Hansen's book A Primer of Happenings and Time Space Art, this 1964 collage is emblematic of the elements of chance and spirit that were essential to the Fluxus movement.

Estimated at $10,000 - $15,000
