Auction: Prints & Multiples, Apr 28, 2026
NEW YORK, NY – Doyle's auction of Prints & Multiples on April 28, 2026 delivered outstanding results—and numerous auction records—sending the sale total soaring beyond expectations. Showcasing examples spanning the 17th century to the present day, the sale featured fine examples of Old Master prints, Modern European prints, American prints and works by Contemporary artists, in addition to ceramics by Pablo Picasso.
Andy Warhol's Marilyn—A World Auction Record
Highlighting the auction was Andy Warhol’s iconic Marilyn that achieved a record $572,000—breaking the prior World Auction Record for a Warhol Marilyn set in 1989. With heavy phone bidding, the competition ultimately narrowed to two private collectors. The result was a new high for a Warhol Marilyn screenprint of any color combination. Consigned by the Estate of Barry Haase of Manalapan, Florida, this black-and-white example broke the record set in 1989 with a purple-red Marilyn.
In 1967, Warhol published the Marilyn Portfolio, a series of ten silkscreen prints based on a publicity still of Marilyn Monroe, each rendered in a different color palette. Created five years after her death, the series reflects Warhol’s fascination with celebrity, repetition and mass production, transforming her image into one of the world’s most recognizable Pop Art icons.
