Morbid anatomy in an unusual Italian paste-paper binding
MORGAGNI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA
De sedibus, et causis morborum per anatomen indagatis libri quinque. Padua: Remondini, 1765. Second edition, issued two years before the death of the author. Two volumes bound as one, 18th-century Italian cartonnage with two patterns of paste-paper (pale blue on the spine and burgundy on the boards), all edges sprinkled red. 15 x 9 1/4 inches (38 x 23.75 cm); lxxxiv, 256 pp., 388 pp.; portrait frontispiece. The binding rather rubbed but still attractive, generally a very clean copy internally.
A foundational work on pathological anatomy, first published in 1761 and with additions and corrections in the present edition. Morgagni's work helped to shape the modern understanding of pathology as he endeavored to link the clinical symptoms of his patients with his post-mortem findings. Garrison-Morton 2276 (1761 edition). The Remondini printing house, which published the book, also specialized in decorative papers, and it is plausible that the very attractive binding here was the publisher's binding.

Thomas Jefferson Letter on Toussaint Louverture
Highlighting the sale was a fascinating 1802 letter from Thomas Jefferson as president to Maryland Governor John Francis Mercer that achieved a strong $32,000. The remarkable letter captures a rare, candid moment in which Jefferson assesses, with striking clarity, the arrest of Toussaint Louverture, a leader of the Haitian Revolution, by French General Charles LeClerc, Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Jefferson perceptively warned that LeClerc’s actions would erode trust and likely spark further racial conflict—an insight that proved remarkably accurate. Beyond its sharp political foresight, the letter reflects the broader anxiety the Haitian Revolution provoked in the United States, which contributed to decades of diplomatic isolation of Haiti.
