The Personal Collection of Al Jaffee

A group of artworks showing Cape Cod, including, Three original paintings by Al Jaffee of Days Cottages, circa 1989. All three are in gouache on paper laid down on illustration board, one is framed, dated, and signed in the lower right corner, and the other two are unsigned, undated, and are housed in a brown paper folder annotated by the artist. The largest painting measures 9 x 29 inches. Light soiling and wear to the margins, one with two bumped corners, the framed painting not examined out of its frame; together with, A framed black and white photograph of Days Cottages seen through a distorted lens. Fine; and with, A watercolor and collage seascape by Al Jaffee titled "Beach Point," 1992. Signed and dated (lr). Framed, with a Provincetown Art Association and Museum label to verso. Fine, none of the framed artworks in this lot has been examined out of frame, sold as is.

Al Jaffee spent his summers on Cape Cod, his "reward for enduring yet another winter in Manhattan." While there, Jaffee "tries to be on vacation... but with little success. The grip of work keeps him pinned to his drawing board" (Weisman, Al Jaffee's Mad Life, p. 211). The paintings are of Day's Cottages in Truro, MA, a series of picaresque identical beachfront cottages that date back to the 1920s and 30s, and of Beach Point, which is also in Truro.

In 1949, twenty year old Grace Kelly moved into the Barbizon Hotel for Women in Manhattan, seeking out Broadway auditions and paying modeling gigs. In 1956, Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier of Monaco in one the greatest fairy tale weddings the world had ever seen. In the years between, Kelly starred in stylish Alfred Hitchcock films such as Rear Window and To Catch a Thief and won an Oscar for her performance in The Country Girl. In that first year in New York City, Grace Kelly met Prudence Wise who became a life long friend, personal secretary, and frequent correspondent. Offered is the largest known group of signed handwritten and typed letters, notes, personal photographs of Kelly and her children, and ephemera to come to market. The archive traces Grace Kelly’s remarkable journey from New York to Hollywood to Monaco in her own words in this substantial group of unpublished letters. View Lot
