The Personal Collection of Al Jaffee
A set of three full-length self-portraits of Jaffee from the front, back, and side, to be used as an animation reference for a documentary film. Circa 2012. Ink and watercolor on paper; 8 1/2 x 10 3/4 inches. Captioned "Al Jaffee by (Yecch!) Al Jaffee. Fine; together with, a set of three preliminary drawings for the portraits. Colored pencils on tracing paper, taped to paper; a set of three drawings of Al Jaffee's head from the front, back, and side. Pen and ink on yellow paper; A political cartoon of a dead and deflated elephant, with flags marked GOP and 2012 nearby. Pen and colored pencil on scrap paper. Captioned "One form of deflation we can all celebrate"; A post-it note stating - "Sent to Phil Michelson for animation reference in MAD documentary film."
Producers Phil Michelson (Moondog Films) and Terry Gilliam have been producing a documentary about Harvey Kurtzman, centered on his short-lived but influential humor magazine, Help, not MAD as Jaffee's note suggests. Gilliam began his career working at Help, and he often refers to Kurtzman as a mentor and one of the godfathers of Monty Python. In fact, Gilliam met John Cleese while working there. The documentary, called Harvey Kurtzman: A Furshlugginer Genius, has not been completed, though a webpage is dedicated to it on Moondog Films' WordPress.
