The Personal Collection of Al Jaffee
Fourteen sheets of original artwork for a strip tentatively titled, "Jason or Gerald or Duncan," circa 1962. Pencil and ink on paper, some with hand-drawn or dot-screen paste-ins, a few pencil notes in margins, some of the drawings are on thin paper laid down on thicker stock, one sheet with Jaffee's Babylon, NY address stamp to verso and a pencil date "8/23/62", all of the drawings are housed in a sheet of folded craft paper titled "Jason or Gerald or Duncan" in marker; the largest sheet measures 7 1/2 x 23 inches. Some pages are numbered (ul), and one leaf is signed (ur). Light soiling, some staining from adhesives, the laid-down thin paper drawings are a bit toned and one is coming loose on one end revealing a drawing underneath.
This group of artworks appears to be an experiment with a Peanuts-style newspaper comic strip, using the classic horizontal four-panel format. The characters that Jaffee created are Jason or Gerald or Duncan, who is a nice and smart lovable loser type, Shirley or Dinny is a strong-headed girl who generally puts him down, Rhino is a bully with no redeeming qualities, and Sam is "the world's only clumsy cat... with a fantasy world that more than makes up for it." He changes the names and appearances of the characters, but their personality traits generally stay the same.
