Estate / Collection: Collection of a New York Surveyor

"Surveyed January 1829 by W. B. Doughty, City Surveyor. Copied Jan[uar]y 12 1830 by E. Smith." Manuscript map in ink on paper, hand colored, paper watermarked "S & A BUTLER / U S", old linen backing. 16 x 20 inches (40.5 x 51 cm). A bit toned and dust soiled, a single pale spot, a few minor creases and tears along edges, some fraying to linen at edges, two pencil manuscript annotations to recto, old and modern ink annotations and stamps to backing.

An attractive manuscript survey map of William Thomas' property between Greene and Mercer Streets just south of Waverly Place (here called Sixth Street). Just off the map to the West would have been Washington Square Park, then used as a military parade ground, which had opened just three years prior in 1826.
